It was a busy week at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as we saw the opening of five new experiences at the park. In anticipation of some major additions coming to Hollywood Studios, many old attractions had been closed, leaving large vacant spaces within this park. Change takes time. Little by little, those empty spaces are being filled. Here are some new things that you can look forward to right now when you visit Hollywood Studios. Downtown Disney has officially been renamed Disney Springs and upon it’s completion in 2016, will consist of several different neighborhoods, featuring more than 150 stores, restaurants and entertainment locations. The neighborhoods will be named The Town Center, The Landing, The West Side, and The Marketplace. Each neighborhood will have a distinct feel, with the current West Side and Marketplace basically retaining their current layouts. When fully completed, Disney Springs will be roughly double the size of the existing area, with more dining, more shopping and more entertainment options. There will even be more parking, with the construction of two new parking garages, making total vehicle capacity around 6000. Goodbye Downtown Disney. Hello Disney Springs!
As Disney tradition goes, the area will have a back story reflecting turn-of-the-century Florida. The idea is that the town grew up around a spring. You will be able to see the evolution in the environment as the town has grown and changed. This spring is what will connect the neighborhoods along the waterfront. In late 2014, with mixed emotions, Disney guests bid farewell to four beloved acts from around the World Showcase at Epcot. While we loved–and would surely miss these shows–we understood the need to refresh the entertainment atmosphere around World Showcase with new acts and experiences to fully immerse us in the culture of each country represented there. Since then, Disney introduced several new entertainment experiences to replace the old ones, and a few new ones were also added to enhance what remained. On my recent visit, I made a point to see all of these new performances and compare how I felt they stacked up to my old favorites. In 1994, my niece, who was 3 at the time, fell in love with Disney’s newest movie release, the Lion King. She so loved it, that she wanted to be Simba for Halloween that year. She was Simba for 3 consecutive Halloweens! As I write this today, my niece is graduating from Grad school! I can’t believe 20 years have gone by since the release of that now-classic film! In honor of the “The Lion King’s” 20th anniversary, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is prepared to stage a special celebration event like no other.
It all begins with a Welcome Reception in the park’s Harambe Village, including mouth-watering appetizers and African –inspired wine and beer. Then it’s time for the “mane” event! Take your seat inside the newly built Harambe theatre for an unforgettable 55 minute performance of “The Lion King – Concert in the Wild.” What makes this performance even more special is that celebrity narrators will be on hand, in addition to a live orchestra and choir, along with dancers. During the show, guests will see the iconic scenes from the film, theatrically recreated for a never before seen take on The Lion King tale. The show brings to life the humor, heart, and stirring emotional power of Simba’s journey to find his place as the Lion King. Having been thrilled with the Festival of the Lion King, I get goose bumps imagining the heights this interpretation of “The Lion King” will reach!
