I think every family that loves Disney and especially loves the feel of staying in a Walt Disney World resort, has a favorite Disney resort. My family is quite partial to Port Orleans Riverside Resort, which is a Disney Moderate Resort. It isn’t necessarily the category of resort that sways me, because I have stayed in almost all of the Disney Deluxe Resort hotels. Yes, some of those are nicer than Riverside, but there is something about that resort that captured me. It was where we stayed on our second visit to Walt Disney World, and was known as Dixie Landings in those days. It was our first trip on our own as a family, so maybe that is what captured me.
The Disney Moderate Resort hotels are really very unique and have so much to offer. They each have their own special themes and amenities. You will find a deluxe feel to the properties, with beautiful landscaping, and this is especially true for Port Orleans Riverside Resort.
Port Orleans Riverside Resort has 2,048 rooms in three-story southern-style mansions and two-story rustic bayou dwellings. Dining includes Riverside Mill food court and Boatwright’s Dining Hall. Recreation includes Ol’ Man Island, a 3 ½-acre old-fashioned swimming hole with slides, rope swings and playgrounds; quiet pools; boat rentals; game room; lounges and a gift shop. There is a lovely riverboat to Downtown Disney Marketplace.
Port Orleans Riverside Resort is the sister resort to Port Orleans French Quarter Resort, and the two resorts share buses. Some people consider this a drawback, but I don’t. Disney tends to provide more buses in this type of situation.
My favorite location at this resort is the mansion area, with its beautiful lush shrubbery and gardens. Parterre Place, building 85, a standard location, will put you near a bus stop, a pool, and the bridge to the main pool and food court. Port Orleans Riverside Resort has preferred buildings now, which price a little higher. They are buildings 14, 15, 18 and 27.
Port Orleans Riverside Resort is undergoing a major renovation right now, and queen size beds will be in almost every room at this resort when it is completed. The only rooms that will not have queen beds are the rooms in the Alligator Bayou section that have trundle beds. Along with this amazing renovation, Disney is going to have rooms that will be royal themed.
What else is special about the Port Orleans Riverside Resort? The Sassagoula River Adventure Cruise is one thing that is special offered at this resort. Children, ages 4 to 12, can experience the Sassagoula River and learn the character “Jester’s” way of life. The cruise is available Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Another fun little spot to relax at this resort is the butterfly garden that is behind Acadia House in the mansion area of the resort.
There is so much to enjoy at the Port Orleans Riverside Resort; you will not be disappointed in a stay there.
